Yummy! Surviving the Holidays

For most of us, weight loss surgery, PCOS, or not, the holidays are a struggle. Especially when we're trying to make good food choices. Everywhere we turn there is temptation. Especially in workplaces and in the homes of friends and family. This was especially challenging for Chris and I since we hosted two parties at our house and then spent the Christmas holiday at his parent's house. This means being out of reach of my food staples. Okay, being honest here, I didn't do so great. I made a lot of BAD food choices and most of them were driven by convenience. I did bring some protein shakes and iced plain coffee so I could get that in every morning so there's that. But I overate and made myself sick on several occasions from having eyes too big for my baby tummy.

BUT... believe it or not, it could have been a lot worse.

How did we not gorge ourselves on the holiday food we bought for the parties we hosted? Well, I HID a lot of the food, deep into the pantry, until the day of the party. Out of sight really helps.

But what am I eating now that we're mostly past the holidays and back in our own home? I went to the grocery store today and replenished our supplies of fresh veggies, protein, and healthy carbs. This is what my shopping looked like this morning:

- Three bottles of unsweetened Starbucks iced coffee

- A 6-pack of a new flavor of Diet Snapple

- A small beef roast I will be using for chili tomorrow

- Package of hot Jimmy Dean sausage

- Bag of low-fat shredded mozz cheese

- One avocado

- One small package of a mixed herb salad

- Two small zucchinni

- Three gala apples

- Two low-carb salad dressings since we have none to speak of

- Low-carb wheat tortillas (3g net carbs each)

- 2% cottage cheese

- One dozen eggs

- One bag of frozen tater tots

All that cost me over $80 at our local Safeway. Food prices are killer.

In the spirit of "getting back on track" and recovering from a food hangover, this is what my consumption looks like today:

Breakfast:

8 oz. iced coffee

1/2 vanilla premier shake

A sip of leftover flat orange soda

Snack:

One container Triple Zero yogurt, mixed berry

A nibble of Chris' delicious "omelette" made with the sausage, zucchini, and tater tots in my new waffle maker.

Lunch:

One low-carb tortilla

2 oz. albacore in water

1/4 an avocado

Sprinkle of herb salad mix

Sprinkle of mozz cheese

One tablespoon of dressing

Dinner will be:

Stuffed vidalia onions -- with ground turkey, bell peppers, zucchini, and carrots.

Mashed cauliflower

Granted, it is 2:30pm and I am still trying to finish my coffee/protein shake and my lunch. Sigh. It's a process sometimes. But getting my protein in is going to make me feel so much better. I'm already at 55 grams of protein once I finish my lunch so dinner should put me over, if not, I'll have a little cottage cheese as a before bedtime snack.

Hope everyone else is surviving and thriving!! Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
